Anointing of the sick

When this sacrament is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God’s will, the person will be healed of illness.  But, even if there is no actual physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which a sick person can receive the Holy Spirit’s gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties of illness or frailty.  Please remember that this Sacrament is not only for those who are seriously or terminally ill. It is for anybody who feels the need to be strengthened by the Lord.

The Priest takes the oil and anoints the sick person. He anoints first on the forehead, saying: Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit.

You will answer: Amen.

Then on the hands, saying: May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.

You will answer: Amen.
