‘CORPUS CHRISTI’ PROCESSION

Corpus Christi Procession June 2010Next Sunday (5th June) at 3.00pm we will have a procession with the Blessed Sacrament around St Edward’s school, singing and also having little stops at three altars, when a priest or deacon will say a few words. We might carry a few banners as well. It is a way of celebrating the gift of Our Lord to us in the Holy Eucharist.
The feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (‘Corpus Christi’) was instituted by the Pope in 1264. Every year in a town north of Rome, and part of the old Papal States, there is a sort of Medieval Pageant, when everyone dresses up in medieval costume, knights in armour, women in long flowing dresses, and the local bishop of the town (Orvieto) carrying a monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament. It is a joyful, festive occasion, as our celebrations of our faith should be.
