Pastoral Notes July 10th, 2016

As with all the Sacraments, but especially with Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist, the chief element is God’s gift of Himself to us. In the welcoming of an adult into the Church all three Sacraments are received on the same occasion – washed, anointed, taking our place at the Lord’s table. Pope Pius X welcomed (in 1910) children to Holy Communion at ‘the age of discretion’, now considered around eight years old, with the sacrament of Confirmation following a few years later, with proper preparation.
Our Bishop Peter will administer Confirmation, as the shepherd and teacher of the diocese of Northampton, anointing the candidates with the oil of chrism, the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit, who overshadowed the Church at the first Pentecost, and strengthens each of us with gifts of prayer and service.
