Pastoral Notes April 19th, 2015

One of the very uplifting elements of our recent Divine Mercy Mass was the presence together of so many different voices. We had our hymns in English, but prayers and Readings mostly repeated in both English and Polish for the first time – also very moving Polish hymns and Malayalee singing, not needing translation in that situation. Many groups came together. The first Reading at Mass throughout the Easter season, Sundays and weekdays, is no longer from the Old Testament (as normally) but entirely from the Acts of the Apostles, giving us a sketch of the spread of the Gospel from Jerusalem to Rome, that is to all the nations. In some traditions, a Deacon will chant through the whole of the Acts of the Apostles on his own in church as a preparation for the Easter Vigil. This does not appeal to all deacons, but is a fine tradition.
