Easter Baptisms

In the early Church the special day for (adult) baptisms was Easter Sunday. The following Sunday has also been called ‘Low’ Sunday, perhaps in contrast to the ‘high’ Sunday of Easter – but also called ‘Sunday in White’. The newly baptised at Easter could continue to wear some white, baptismal garment until the following Sunday, when they – and we – are reminded that, though we have been reborn in baptism-waters, we are still like infants, helpless infants, and in need of the strengthening milk of God’s goodness coming to us through the Sacraments of the Church …. and also, we now have the Sunday named ‘Divine Mercy’ Sunday to encourage us again!
