14th September: Feast of the Triumph of the Holy Cross

There is a feast kept on 18th August of St Helen, who was the mother of the Roman Emperor, Constantine. Helen was of humble origin, daughter of an inn-keeper, loved and married by a famous Roman General. But when he became emperor he was persuaded to choose a more aristocratic wife! However, Helen already had a son, and when he in time became emperor, he restored his mother to his home. It was then that she became a Christian, and in 324 travelled to Jerusalem where relics of the Cross were found and a basilica built, there to this day. Helen died in Palestine, in 331, over 80 years old. The shrines in Israel are well-preserved and protected to this day, Christian, Jewish and Muslim.
