Pastoral Notes 7th September 2014

Welcome to Michael Bates, a student for the priesthood, at Oscott College, Birmingham. The city is the second largest in England and was once a great centre of the local Church. In the College Chapel in 1852 the then Father John Henry Newman preached a memorable sermon to the newly-established hierarchy of English Bishops on the theme of a ‘Second Spring’. The Catholic Church has certainly spread enormously since those days and is now experiencing a new time of challenge. The Northampton Diocese has had students for the priesthood also in Allen Hall, London, in Wonersh, near Guildford, Surrey, and in the English College and Beda Colleges in Rome. Today our students are in Birmingham and in Rome. We also have permanent Deacons, something re-established from earlier times. We pray for all our students and for future vocations. Michael will be with us until January 2015 inclusive.
