Wednesday 3rd June was the feast of the Uganda martyrs, witnessing to the sacrifice of the Mass with their own sacrifice. “The Uganda Martyrs hold a place of prominence in the history of the Church in Africa. They were persecuted for their faith and executed for refusing to dent their Christianity. A total of 23 Catholic and 22 Anglican martyrs are formally recognised. The Catholic martyrs were beatified in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV. They were canonised by Pope Paul VI during his visit to Uganda in 1969”, when he made special mention of the Anglican martyrs at the same time. Following their ordinary trade, “St Andrew is a patron saint of catechists, St Denis a patron saint of church musicians and St Pontian, who was a palace guard, is a patron saint of soldiers and polemen” (AFRICA magazine). We pray for Father Jo, also a great witness, and all his vast community.
