Pastoral Notes 27th January, 2019

The official closing feast of the Christmas season is next Saturday, 2nd February. The feasts of the church have developed gradually through history, with the initial high-feast being the Easter Feast of the Resurrection. The feast at Christmas, with its own advent preparation, developed later. The 2nd February has been given various names, but is known especially as the Presentation – as that was when the Infant Jesus was presented in the temple in the ancient Jewish ceremony of circumcision. It is a feast of Light – recalling Jesus coming as the Light of the World – therefore, at Mass, we light candles in an opening procession, rejoicing as we share in Christ’s Light.
