Pastoral Notes 27th April 2014

On Sunday April 27th, Pope John XXIII and Pope John-Paul II will be canonised by Pope Francis in Rome. This Sunday, with its Divine Mercy Mass, especially recalls Pope John-Paul, who instituted the feast and wrote a special encyclical, universal letter, entitled ‘On the Divine Mercy’.  He recalls the theme of God’s mercy first of all in the Old Testament where the ‘hesed’ of God, the compassion of God, is proclaimed. We might remember in particular an event common to both Popes mentioned above, namely an early visit to see prisoners in Rome Prison. When Pope John XXIII paid his visit it was special as a first formal visit outside the Vatican State of a Pope for almost a century. In Pope John-Paul’s case it is linked to a later scene, when he visited the man who shot him in St Peter’s square. May the compassion of Christ grow in us and the whole Church.

Live broadcast of the Canonization of Popes John Paul II and John XXIII takes place 9.00am Sunday April 27th, 2014
