Pastoral Notes 19th June, 2016

“In Ireland, one child in five goes to school without a breakfast. The UK has 2.3 million children living in poverty. In the United States, one person in every seven struggles with hunger. Faced with such similar statistics and lack of governmental urgency, one devout Catholic in Phoenix, Arizona decided to “do something”. He set up the world’s first food bank. His simple plan, back in the late 1960s, has remained basically the same for food banks today – to distribute food directly to those who have difficulty purchasing enough food to avoid hunger … The Trussel Trust, a Christian Charity since the 2008 recession, runs 423 and there are about the same number run independently”.
