Bishop’s Call to a Year of Prayer
We all have our own ways of praying but perhaps some thoughts from great examples can help us. Cardinal John Henry Newman, who was beatified by Pope Benedict about 2005, used to suggest saying: “I come into the presence of God, in whose presence I have always been, before ever I began to pray.” In other words, coming into church, perhaps, or at home, with one or other help to prayer, we might remember that we are always in God’s loving presence, but from time to time, in our human way, we become aware of the Lord. St Thomas Aquinas suggested that, if we fall asleep while praying, then our prayer is our sleep, which we obviously needed! However we approach it, a daily prayer is a great help to us, entrusting ourselves to our Lord.
