Notes for Christmas

Christmas Masses are arranged in a way which looks back to a tradition in ancient Rome, where the Pope celebrated three Masses – at night, dawn and day – itself recalling the Christian practice in Israel itself: a Mass at Bethlehem, then in the early morning a Mass at nearby Jerusalem, and then a daytime Mass in the main church. The Christmas Masses we celebrate continue to have that theme of gentle worship, of watchful praise, and triumphant celebration.
